Toronto, Nonnie Griffin in “Love Letters”

Love Letters by A.R. Gurney, the well-known American playwright, chronicles the relationship of a man and woman through their letters. The first letters date from childhood and go on from there into the late adult years of these two people. Love Letters is written to be read, thus very little rehearsal is required, no set has to be built and very little else is required in the production of his play. All that is needed is merely two desks and chairs, enough light to read by and the two performers who, letter by letter give the audience the story of Andy and Melissa as if performing a radio play for the public, Gurney generally writes about the moneyed segment of society, and Love Letters is no exception. He knows and understands their particular problems and places himself in a rather unusual category from most playwrights A.R. Gurney began to write while working as a lawyer in New York, finding time here and there to scribble ideas and put together pages of dialogue. Before long his work began to gain recognition and he left the law firm and continued to write full time. Some of his most successful works have been : The Dining Room, The Cocktail Hour and Children – amongst others. He himself has appeared as Andy in Love Letters, an experience he has enjoyed, particularly as memorization of the text is not required! The September 11th production of Love Letters at Earthsong Village, 2436 Kingston Rd. downstairs, will feature well-known actress, Nonnie Griffin as Melissa, and Daniel Wyse as Andy. Daniel was recently seen in Scarborough Village Players production of There Goes The Bride. Daniel’s experience is vast and varied, having done countless musicals throughout his life, as well as straight theatre. He combined a business career along with regular appearances on stage. Ms. Griffin’s last appearance was in Sister Annunciata’s Secret a dynamic play she both wrote and performed and which will be remounted in The Studio of Alumnae Theatre in October, 2012.
